Ólafsfjördur & Fjallabyggð
Ólafsfjördur is located in North Iceland, 415 km from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland and 61 km from Akureyri, the 2nd big town of Iceland. Ólafsfjördur is lying on the branch of Eyjafjordur, the longest bay of Iceland with about 800 population. The main industries are fishing and products related to fishing.
In 2006, Ólafsjardabær and Siglufjardarkaupstadur are merged into
the municipality, Fjallabyggd. In 2011, the new Hédinsfjardargöng tunnel is open. These two tunnels (7km. & 4km. respectively) shorten two towns with distance in 15km. Before this new tunnel is ready, two towns are 62 km apart using the mountain road over Lágheidi. However during the winter, the road is always closed due to heavy snow. Then people had to travel 234 km in between.
Now, Héðinsfjördur (the place between the Tunnels) become the paradise for photographing northern lights.
